Dai sistemi socio-tecnici all’intersistematicità: uno sfondo teorico per la trasformazione tecnologica

This chapter develops a theoretical framework for interpreting contemporary technological transformation through the lens of socio-technical systems. Starting from the origins of the socio-technical approach and its critique of technological determinism, the contribution reconstructs the dialogue between organization studies, sociology, Human-Computer Interaction, and information science. The analysis focuses on the concept of artifact, understood as a bridge between social and technical dimensions: within organizations, artifacts are not merely tools, but embody meanings, norms, practices, and coordination logics. The chapter then introduces the notion of intersystematicity to describe the increasing integration of organizational, social, technological, and normative systems, which are becoming progressively less separable in their operation. From this perspective, digital technologies, including ICTs and artificial intelligence, are not treated as external forces impacting society, but as co-constitutive components of organizational relations and decision-making processes. The chapter therefore offers a multidisciplinary contribution aimed at understanding the risks, opacity, and potential of current technological transformations.

Il capitolo propone un quadro teorico per interpretare la trasformazione tecnologica contemporanea a partire dalla tradizione dei sistemi socio-tecnici. Muovendo dalle origini dell’approccio socio-tecnico e dal suo superamento delle letture deterministiche della tecnologia, il contributo ricostruisce il dialogo tra studi organizzativi, sociologia, Human-Computer Interaction e scienze dell’informazione. Al centro dell’analisi vi è il concetto di artefatto, assunto come ponte tra dimensioni sociali e tecniche: nelle organizzazioni gli artefatti non sono semplici strumenti, ma incorporano significati, norme, pratiche e logiche di coordinamento. Il capitolo introduce quindi la nozione di intersistematicità per descrivere l’integrazione crescente tra sistemi organizzativi, sociali, tecnologici e normativi, ormai sempre meno separabili nel loro funzionamento. In questa prospettiva, le nuove tecnologie digitali, incluse le ICT e l’intelligenza artificiale, non sono considerate fattori esterni che impattano sulla società, ma componenti co-costitutive delle relazioni organizzative e dei processi decisionali. Il contributo valorizza così un approccio multidisciplinare capace di leggere rischi, opacità e potenzialità delle trasformazioni tecnologiche contemporanee.
