This chapter presents a socio-historical and linguistic profile of Valle d’Aosta, a small autonomous region in Italy with a bilingual Italian-French linguistic minority that is recognized by the Republic. First the chapter analyses the historical dialectic between the macro and micro territorial dynamic which sees Valle d’Aosta as a paradigmatic case of « European continental micro-territory multilingualism ». Then the chapter moves to an analysis of the contradictions within the present socio-linguistic situation, and attempts to explain both the marginality of French in the community’s language practices and the central identity and socio-political values that are still associated to this language.

Abstract
This chapter presents a socio-historical and linguistic profile of Valle d’Aosta, a small autonomous region in Italy with a bilingual Italian-French linguistic minority that is recognized by the Republic. First the chapter analyses the historical dialectic between the macro and micro territorial dynamic which sees Valle d’Aosta as a paradigmatic case of « European continental micro-territory multilingualism ». Then the chapter moves to an analysis of the contradictions within the present socio-linguistic situation, and attempts to explain both the marginality of French in the community’s language practices and the central identity and socio-political values that are still associated to this language.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
