The article aims to outline the historical and pedagogical profile of Evaristo Madeddu - lived between 1890 and 1966 - whose influence on Sardinian society is now documented through a series of research and publications that attest to his importance and originality. As well as being a forerunner of a more modern way of understanding the laity in the ecclesiastical sphere, he forged close relations with the Sardinian territory as a whole, interweaving his action with the demands for renewal and social justice that the backwardness of the State was unable to guarantee. Despite the evident continuity with the political regimes of the time, Madeddu was able to meet the needs of the poorest, of abandoned and derelict children, combining his welfare and educational work with the integral promotion of man in all his omni-lateral connotations: from the moral to the character to the aesthetic, thus drawing an ideal of humanistic education.
