Abstract

Personal and private ties with England, the common experience of teaching, reading Edgar Allan Poe constantly–all these placed English at the heart of Mallarmé and Verlaine’s literary work. For both artists, indeed, use of the language appears as the starting point for a line of thought that is at once metalinguistic and poetic.
