Oddr Snorrason's biography of Óláfr Tryggvason likely represents one of the earliest attempts by an Icelander to compose an extended literary narrative. Oddr clearly wrote for an audience whose standards of historiography had evolved outside of Iceland, although his informants and source material lay largely outside the purview of such European culture. This paper focusses on Oddr's interpretation of the vernacular biographical genre of the scaldic 'drápa' in his construction of a hagiographical account of Óláfr Tryggvason for the international community of ecclesiastical literati who would have had interest in such an apologetics at the end of the twelfth century.

Abstract
Oddr Snorrason's biography of Óláfr Tryggvason likely represents one of the earliest attempts by an Icelander to compose an extended literary narrative. Oddr clearly wrote for an audience whose standards of historiography had evolved outside of Iceland, although his informants and source material lay largely outside the purview of such European culture. This paper focusses on Oddr's interpretation of the vernacular biographical genre of the scaldic 'drápa' in his construction of a hagiographical account of Óláfr Tryggvason for the international community of ecclesiastical literati who would have had interest in such an apologetics at the end of the twelfth century.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
