Abstract

My birth was announced by a German word: Kinderheim. In fact, my brother and sister were sent away to one, to make sure my mother and the new-born baby (that was me) would have two weeks of quiet. As was usual in families of German descent like mine, children could spend part of their vacation in such a place, usually at the sea or in the mountains. For my brother and sister, it was the sea. For them, it was the beginning of a hostility to everything German (including the language), which led them be totally disinterested by their origins.
